About this saw

A carcass saw is the one for general bench work: cutting boards to length, sawing tenon shoulders, trimming the ends of drawer sides, anything that crosses the grain. This one is filed cross cut at 13 points per inch with a 15 degree rake and 25 degrees of fleam, so the teeth slice the fibres rather than tear them and leave a clean shoulder that needs little cleaning up. The blade is 300mm long and cuts to 70mm deep.

The blade is 0.5mm spring steel, SAE 1080 hardened to 44 to 47 HRC, which is stiff enough to track straight and soft enough to sharpen with a needle file at home. A solid brass spine runs the length of it, keeping the blade true and adding the weight that lets the saw feed itself. The handle is PNG Rosewood, a timber from Papua New Guinea with a warm gold to red-brown colour that darkens a touch with age. It’s 469 grams in all, which makes for a lively feel on longer cuts. The handle hangs at 23 degrees and is shaped for a medium hand, a palm around 90mm across.

This saw is one of my first small batch. The brass spines were made at HNT Gordon, where I spent time learning tool making with Terry Gordon, and the split nuts are made by hand using what he taught me. The batch marks the origins of Kaz Saw, and once these saws have found homes there won’t be another like them.

It comes sharpened and ready to cut. Email me and I’ll send it anywhere in Australia by registered mail.
